At least thirteen people killed and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
