Prime TV Selections: 7 Can't-Miss Motion Pictures This Coming Week

Top Selection

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's bold critique examines the tyranny of women's appearance and the feared consequences of ageing. The veteran actress presents a masterful acting turn as Elisabeth, a mature actress demoted to starring in an aerobics show on the small screen. Forced aside thanks to her deceitful superior her manager Harvey, she undergoes a mysterious and gruesome procedure titled this experimental method. This generates a younger clone named Sue, leading to an increasingly vampiric relationship between the two. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This Agatha Christie-esque thriller stars Keira Knightley playing Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for some time off from reporting on global conflict to embark on a luxury cruise alongside an ailing Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her partner, and other affluent passengers. But after a mysterious woman disappears from the ship during the evening and everyone claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts take over. Streaming currently, Netflix

Presence Film

Soderbergh tests his creative boundaries with this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely from the perspective of the phantom. When a household featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their fresh home, the camera – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems aware of the supernatural presence, and it looks like guarding her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Nicolas Cage fully commits to his unique fame through this autobiographical spoof. He acts as a narcissistic film star named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a $1m payday to attend a celebration on the Spanish island for the wealthy superfan Javi. Recruited by the intelligence agency to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's unique performing skills proves useful. October 11th, 9pm, on Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

The director's claustrophobic thriller stands strong even without a follow-up. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, several kidnappings has rendered the local kids anxious. When Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and locked up in a dungeon, he fears a terrible outcome. But the non-functional line mounted nearby continues to ring, with eerie communicators offering help, and the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. October 11th, nighttime, Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky true story about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who states initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals commence monetising the people's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet the lead actress manages to depict the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, late night, on Film4

The Spy Mystery

The current week's another release from the filmmaker is a spy mystery as sharp like the turtlenecks worn by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He is tasked with uncovering a traitor among the team from a group of five – one of whom is his spouse. Both actors excel of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful mind game of fact versus fiction takes place. The supporting cast take part the intelligent intelligence fun. This Friday, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, the Sky channel
